I've now re-read through the parts you refer to (and the OSA Express
Implementation redbook) and they all do appear to talk about mapping via
the OSA
PORTNAME parameter. I don't remember seeing that or reading it that way
when
I set it up a couple of years ago and apparently my z/OS system didn't
read the
manuals either because it's working fine the way it is. Fascinating.

No, just an ordinary (VM-virtualised) QDIO one. There are actually three,
each
coupled to a separate z/VM VSWITCH, two of which are local-only
(effectively
just GuestLANs) and one of which connects externally via a real OSA
ethernet port.
z/OS sees them all as real OSAs for which it is the only image accessing
them
(hence no PORTNAME conflicts).
They're definitely active and working: the "local network" one below gets
almost
no traffic (but non-zero, as you can see, and I tested it yesterday) while
the
external one gets much more traffic.
