100 companies, 100 different answers. Search the archives as this
has been discussed. I've probably already wrote what I am going
to write next....

I have been doing quarterly RSU minus 1 quarter. That means when RSU0709
came out, I did RSU0706. That is because quarterly RSU has (had) been
the recommended way of doing maintenance since CST. But since everyone
does that, doing current quarterly RSU is sort of like being current on
PUT used to be (you are the first to really test it). But I also do look at
HIPERs via ASAP on IBMLINK (when it works) and selectively apply ones that I
really think could affect us. Mostly, I still wait for it to hit an RSU
because if
you look at ASAP as much as I do, you'll see that lots of HIPERs still go PE
(this really scares me!) I used to do quarterly RSU + HIPER + PRP. That was
the old recommendation and because of HIPERs that went PE (and
getting burned a few times) I stopped doing it.

I have found that the above has kept us really stable for z/OS 1.8 but I am
considering changing to waiting one or 2 months after quarterly comes
out instead of 3 months (i.e, when RSU0710 comes out, do RSU0709). This
is because when I consider the amount of time to roll the maintenance out
through my sandbox, development and production... there could be an
additional 30-45 days from the time I apply it. Not to mention the delay
before it actually hits RSU (more below on that).

If you have access to the SHARE web site, Greg Daynes gave a session
on z/OS maintenance best practices. His recommendation (which is
similar to what IBM has recommended since CST) was to use RSU*
because of the lag time that a PTF already has had from the time it
was created, tested, available as corrective service and PUT is already
a long time before it hits any RSU after CST.

HTH,

Mark
