For what it's worth, I think this IBM-MAIN subject line choice is a bad

First, the word "disadvantages": sadly, such incidents are not unique to India. Unfortunately in a global comparison of crime rates the U.S., as an
example, might not rank well.

Timothy. I had thought about the wording on this and came up with it as neutral and not anti (any country) just outsourcing in general. I was not trying to be PC just convey to the reader that there are issues that we rarely see here in the states. Having said that, there was an article in the papers (I will try and locate it) about theft in a Data Center here in Chicago. While its not an apples to apples comparison(crime) it does show as you indicate there are unfortunate things that happen to any company in the US/offshore. This item (and I can't find it now but will continue to look for) was really the first I had ever heard about theft in a data center (anywhere). I guess I should have forwarded it to the group as it was unusual (IMO). It (IIRC) did not mention that it was an IBM installation so I held back on sending it. I am sure if I had I would have heard somebody it was OT. But to get back to your main thought I do not believe I have ever heard of a threat being made to a data center (like this one) here in the US. There may have been for all I know but it certainly wasn't reported.

Second, the word "outsourcing": a huge part of IBM's presence in India
involves the myriad activities to sell and support its growing product and
service businesses in India, including products and services produced
outside India. The word "exporting" would be more accurate.

I disagree with your exporting word. But you are correct I think that there needs to be another term used. Perhaps "offshore"?

At least the "OT" (off-topic) part is correct: the chosen subject line has
nothing to do with the story.

It's a simple story deserving a simple reaction. I hope we can all agree
that this threat is reprehensible and move on.

I think I disagree and would say while its reprehensible its a factor (IIRC there are companies that look at the pros/cons of off-shoring) and "stuff" like this is not mentioned. I have a friend that does off- shoring and I asked him if it is and unfortunately he is out of the country doing his job and hasn't gotten back to me if the issue is/is not talked about. If he does respond I will let the group know his response.
