Hi Bill, CA SMF Director can be set up either way, although it is best to have the automated dumping feature active on all LPARs. Please keep in mind that if the Control Data Set (SCDS) is going to be shared among LPARs, that all of the LPARs must be in the same GRS scheme.
There are ways to run with SMF Director by sending the data to a single system or systems if you like. On those systems, you would want to use the IFASMFDP utility to dump the MAN Files to a sequential file or GDG, and then that can be read into SMF Director using the SOURCE dump facility. The system where the data is from needs to be configured in the SCDS, but the SOURCE dump can be run on any system. Hope this helps! Do I need to have it running on all LPARS or can I run it on one and send the SMF data to it? This gives a single point for extracting SMF data from any LPAR and for collecting it. Alternatively you can give each LPAR its own CDS and extract/collect only for that one LPAR.
