I thought I had tried that to no avail but I guess I misread the message I got back. I issued the CD /...uss/.... and got right in. PUT the stuff from z/Linux and, voila, all the carriage returns are there and everything works!
The key was FTP 'TO' MVS - just the kind of thing a newbie misses.
