Dean I meant to change the subject of this thread in my last post - but forgot!
Since you have concluded that you need to replace what you describe simply as "Anynet" with Enterprise Extender, I can infer that the particular flavour of AnyNet which you are using is AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP. Regarding you emphasis on "simplicity", the key point I needed to know about the products which use AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP is whether the products use APPC which can mean only SSCP-independent LU support is required. The more complicated alternative is that these products use another LU type such as LU type 0 which would require SSCP-dependent LU support. With both AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP and Enterprise Extender, the former is somewhat easier and can be described as the simpler implementation. I'm afraid that, that point regarding SSCP-dependent versus SSCP- independent support apart, there are no further degrees of simplicity in the implementation of AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP so your "very simple state" doesn't really have much in the way of relevance. Regarding simplicity with Enterprise Extender and concerning Enterprise Extender itself, there are possible elaborations to the basic implementation in, especially, connection network support and, further, connection network support crossing APPN subnetwork borders. However, you may be able to benefit from the former (probably not the latter) since the objective of connection networks is to simplify configurations where otherwise there would be excessive logical link definitions. The major obstacle you may very well need to surmount is enabling your VTAM network to support APPN. No amount of simplification in the mode of use of the Enterprise Extender function can make that potential task any easier. You will need to take up this whole matter with your VTAM specialist before converting to z/OS 1.8 or beyond. It's just possible that your VTAM specialist has already enabled APPN within your SNA network. If so, the task of converting from AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP to Enterprise Extender will be much more straightforward. Please post again if you need more help. Incidentally, topics relating to Enterprise Extender - even simply the SNA component of Communications Server aka VTAM - tend to get aired on the IBMTCP-L list rather than this list but we've started here so we may as well continue here.
