This is just a curiousity question. It is not a request that IBM or anybody else actually do anything, OK?
I love using regular expressions in Perl, awk, and grep. However, they can be very CPU intensive. So, given that IBM has basically made it possible to "offload" XML (via System XML) procession to a zIIP/zAAP, I wonder if they would be open to making a "System regex" engine ala System XML to offload regular expressions. Given the apparent direction of doing more UNIX like work on z/OS, and given the extreme popularity of regular expressions in UNIX scripting languages, I wonder about this (python and Ruby also have regular expressions, as does emacs and vi). Also, has anybody heard of an official NetREXX for z/OS? That is REXX which compiles to Java byte codes and should run on a zAAP. If IBM were to take that and make a TSO version as well ... Yes, I did find a version that may work at: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/awdtools/netrexx/download.html -- John McKown Senior Systems Programmer HealthMarkets Keeping the Promise of Affordable Coverage Administrative Services Group Information Technology The information contained in this e-mail message may be privileged and/or confidential.
