I remember a SHARE session in which a control unit guru from IBM-TUCSON described the wonderful new DASD Fast Write feature of the 3990 (AUG 1993, I think). She told the audience that IBM had done extensive modeling and was convinced that 4MB would be enough NVS for all possible workloads.
