How much existing code would break? Example: PDS uses TTR in the
directory to point to the member. Lots of code depends on TTR.

The self answered question "What does you mean, Steve? "

It is cheaper for IBM to continue with CKD emulated on FBA RAID than it
is for them to put out a new DASD geometry, or handle FBA natively.

[However, I thought there was a published interface for the channels so
that if you wanted to attach your own device... And there is nothing
that says your device can't be DASD.]

So, how do you convert CCCCSS (CCCC = some number of cylinders, SS
sector #) to TTR/TTTR? Since VSE supports it (long time ago I used to
write // EXTENT... cards for FBA devices), how difficult would it be to
port that support? Even VSAM and CATALOGS are kept on FBA.

How difficult would it be to write (or under the covers, convert) CKD
CCWs to FBA CCWs?

For whatever reason, IBM has decided they do not want to invest the
money in it. But, where are the 3390 disk drives they are making that
SEAGATE $500 drives would kill the market for?

Apparently, enough customers are not complaining loud enough to force
the issue.

Regards,
Steve Thompson
