I have not used that exit, but believe that you should be able to use VPUT and VGET services.
On each call to the exit: 1. VGET variable from SHARED pool, if it does not exist, save initial value. 2. process as necessary 3. if some status changes, VPUT changed variable back to SHARED pool.
