Thanks to all for the good info, and to those to replied offline. It seems that the best option is to OPEN/BLDL/STOW/CLOSE to add statistics after writing the member. It doesn't seem so bad, but I realized that I also have to OPEN/BLDL/CLOSE *before* updating an existing member so that I can get any prior statistics so that I can carry forward creation date, version/mod level, etc.
