Netcraft.com says the site is Linux, and they tend to be rather accurate so
I'd believe it. There are many reasons why query.exe might appear embedded
in the URL of a Linux-hosted Web site. Some of those reasons have already
been mentioned. Another possible explanation is Mono.
... Or the front-end is (one or more) reverse proxy/ies or load
balancer(s) that fan(s) out stuff to various back-end servers - possibly
connecting to specific servers depending on the request being served.
Now, although I know you can determine the personality of the TCP and IP
stacks by looking at the peculiarities, I don't think you can infer the
hardware platform (for those stacks that can run on multiple platforms),
nor can you determine whether all processing is done directly at the
front-end vs a deep n-tier system.
For all we know, their system could be built with a cluster of front-end
appliances running x86 linux, fanning out requests to windows machines
serving HTTP requests that then send requests to some i5/OS machines
which connect to a DB2 database hosted on zLinux[1] running under z/VM
which serves data through a SAN switch running linux connecting to a
pool of DSxxxx running.. something.. (all this is purely speculative of
course).
