My background is mainly JES2 but here at Credit Suisse, we've

I'd appreciate if some would offer to discuss with me offline.

I have never been a print operator. But, I have operated small printers using JES3. The commands seemed straightforward enough: various forms of *CALL, *START, *RESTART, *CANCEL, and *MODIFY. There are hot writers that are started/stopped by humans and dynamic writers that are started/stopped automatically by JES3 as eligible output arrives. Writers have selection criteria you can change and various settings that control separator pages, etc. For AFP printers, an FSS must be started. It runs code (printer drivers) provided by the printer manufacturer and a JES interface to select the output and surface printer status such as intervention needed. Multiple FSAs can live within a single FSS address space. Each FSA drives one printer.

JES3-L <at> LISTSERV.UGA.EDU discusses JES3-specific topics. Many of the people engaged in the discussions there represent *large* installations. As such, they probably have "armies" of print operators. You might try soliciting help there as well...
