We have COBOL programs using both OS/VS COBOL and COBOL 2 running on zOS
1.9. The COBOL2 should be fairly easy to convert by just recompiling and
making sure that the LE runtime is used. Even if you use the COBOL2
compiler using the CEELKED library in the link edit will assure that
these program continue to run for a while yet. The OS/VS COBOL programs
don't know about LE. I was at a Share meeting when IBM COBOL support
said they would not intentionally break the any old COBOL programs but
that they are not coding nor verifying support for the old COBOL
anymore. These programs can have problems with file I/O with VSAM and
other problems that you are at risk being out of support for. Try
calling in a problem on a program bug to IBM on one of the old
compilers. They will tell you convert it and they will be glad to help
you. The IBM CICS support team has already told you that OS/VS COBOL
will not run under CICS TS V3.2. However, there are OEM products that
you can purchase to extend the life of these programs if you wish to do
so. Better yet, there are products that will give you an approximately
90% converted Enterprise COBOL program.

Subject: Re: LE question about COBOL compatibility

For several Shares (Seattle, Baltimore, Tampa, San Diego and San Jose),
I have had to follow up on OS/VS COBOL issues as we have several large,
mission critical systems written in OS/VS and VS COBOL II. This is
always a topic at some of the sessions. I have been there when IBM has
asked for a show of hands; who is still running these old COBOLs, why,
and why not upgrade. Generally, 60-75% of the hands went up. Each
time, I have heard them (IBM) say that these old COBOLs are not
supported, but should run with z/OS 1.9 (the latest release I heard
specifically mentioned). They (the IBM folks in the room at the time)
said that continued 'runability' was not something that IBM would commit
to, though they understand the issue and they have been working on tools
and services to help us make the move.

Perhaps one or more of the IBM folks on the thread might like to
comment?
