To my knowledge the use attribute of a SMS-Managed volume is not intended to used. So, I'd think that utilities like ICKDSF should also ignore the use attribute of a SMS-managed volume.
I'd be tempted to submit a design change request to IBM suggesting that they: 1. Have SMS force the use attribute to be PRIV for all SMS-managed volumes, or 2. Change DASD utilities to first verify that the volume is non-SMS managed, then check the use attribute. 3. Tell us what purpose the use attribute provides for SMS-managed volumes.
