High Performance FICON for System z (zHPF)
zHPF is a performance and RAS enhancement of the System z architecture and the
FICON channel architecture implemented exclusively in System z10. By exploiting
zHPF by the FICON channel under the z/OS operating system, the control unit
will reduce the FICON channel overhead. This is achieved by protocol
simplification and reducing the number of information units (IUs) processed,
resulting in more efficient use of the fiber link. The FICON Express4 and FICON
Express2 features support both the existing FICON architecture and the zHPF
architecture. zHPF channel programs can be exploited by OLTP I/O workloads –
such as DB2, VSAM, PDSE, and zFS – that transfer small (4K) blocks of
fixed-sized data. The maximum number of I/Os is designed to be improved up to
100% for small data transfers that can exploit zHPF. Realistic production
workloads with a mix of data transfer sizes can see up to 30% to 70% of FICON
I/Os utilizing zHPF resulting in up to a 10% to 30% savings in channel
utilization.
