One way to know is to test it with an optical distance simulator before
putting the link in place ( if it is not yet installed or ordered)  
As they are quite expensive, some consulting companies are renting them for
a day or a week.  ( see with the networks guys t your shop )
It is more reliable than speculate about the effect of the latency, and it
allows you to adjust your parameter settings easily as the server, the
simulator and the console will be in the same room next to you on a local setup.
