Thank you John, that URL is exactly what I was thinking of.  Thanks also for 
the connectivity lesson, obviously much needed.  As a last resort z/Linux 
under Hercules accessing CCKD copies of the disks could use this module to 
access files. But then, so could ZZA utilities which are a lot simpler.
