We had similar problems in the past with SMS-managed tapes and non-managed tapes with the same volser. We were unable to process the non-managed volumes, because SMS "knew" the tape was managed and demanded that tape. In your situation I assume SMS knows that there is a disk with that volser and will refuse any other devicetype.
