Hmmm.   I don't seem to have a problem.  I also don't have anything
special in my automount specifications, just the aggrgrow=on setting
in my ZFS parms.

I saw my user zfs was already in extents, but I just forced it to more by
copying some files within it to new a new directory and saw this:

IOEZ00551I Aggregate ZELDENM.ZFS ran out of space.                         
     
IOEZ00312I Dynamic growth of aggregate ZELDENM.ZFS in progess, (by user
ZELDENM).
IOEZ00312I Dynamic growth of aggregate ZELDENM.ZFS in progess, (by user
ZELDENM).

This was under z/OS 1.9.
