The ability for the S/360 customers to pick the model that fit them and then grow into another model was pretty unusual. A migration of Mod 30->40->50->65-> etc. without having to reprogram and recompile or reassemble (and not having to wait for the next model top be designed) was a big deal. And no, I don't think any one customer ever went through an upgrade path like that. But it could have been done.
