Subject: SMS migration concern 1.9 and 1.10 mixed level SMS translate,
validate, activate on 1.9 caused storage leak in SMS leading to IPL

Hi,

Anyone know of an APAR for this or a documented migration action or existing
toleration service?

This tip was passed along from another account but I would expect this should
have resulted in an APAR to prevent the storage exhaustion or one to prevent
the activation in a mixed complex. I have not yet located anything.

========================================================
If your customer is running a JESplex with mixed levels of z/OS 1.9 and 1.10,
be sure they understand that they need to do a translate, validate, activate of
their DFSMS ACDS on a 1.10 system before using it there.  Two fields have been
added in 1.10, and if they use a 1.9-level ACDS on a 1.10 system, it will
GETMAIN the size that 1.10 thinks it should be, but when done it will FREEMAIN
only the size that it was in 1.9.  This means that a x'30' byte fragment of
storage will remain allocated, causing the entire block to be unusable.  (The
eyecatchers in that storage are the names of the two new fields.)

After enough SMS activity, these fragmented blocks will accumulate in the SMS
address space's extended private area to force subsequent GETMAINs to look
below the line, where it will proceed to fragment storage there as well,
resulting in S878 abends on further such SMS GETMAINs, forcing a refresh of the
SMS address space (FORCE SMS,ARM) or an IPL.  After properly activating the
ACDS on the 1.10 system, further fragmentation will cease.

They can use the 1.10-level ACDS on 1.9 LPARs although there will be a warning
message issued.
