Try creating GDG(+1) from z/OS Unix. Note that using the 'cp' command
generates two SMF 15 records - can't DSN trigger using it. Find something
else that works with GDGs. I'll wait.
While I'm in the shell, I can't use split screen. 13.11 and 3.17 don't
have all the capabilities of the shell. Monitoring the Unix environment
presents challenges.
I have a comprehensive set of JCL to do a zillion things in classic MVS.
Shell scripts don't cut it. Education issue? Perhaps. I'll get right on
it in my copious free time.
Mainframe auditors trying to understand Unix security model or Unix
auditors trying to audit z/OS - both keep my life interesting.
Inability of classic MVS utilities to manipulate Unix files. Much as it
grates, I have to agree with Mr Gilmartin. If you really want adoption of
Unix facilities, utilities and JCL should treat path/file same as DSN=,
including executables.
Please, please, please give me error messages that don't require
multistage lookup. That LookAt and Quick-Ref can understand.

Short version: the toolset is limited, Unix files are treated differently
(or not at all) by traditional JCL and Utilities, Unix commands to
manipulate data have (documented but non-intuitive) restrictions, and z
Sysprogs are already swamped with keeping up with the technology,
particularly in medium shops where very few people support a lot of
infrastructure.

I don't dislike Unix at all. I play with various versions of Unix and
Linux at home. It's interesting comparing different OS capabilities and
facilities. Here at work is a different story. Unexpected difficulties
in the movement of data between z/OS Unix and classic MVS, and the
manipulation of data from one environment to the other, plus the lack of
supporting tools, all contribute to reluctance to develop applications
based on Unix facilities.

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life wrote a blank check
made payable to ' The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to
and including my life.' That is Honor, and there are too many people in
this country who no longer understand it.
