We're not talking performance, here.
We're talking space, volumes, & TIOT (Task I/O Table).

While interesting from a history perspective, this has nothing to do with the 
issue under discussion.
Performance is something I've been doing since 1981 & 3330 disk, but space 
constraints are different.
