Novell and Red Hat are very aggressively competing for System z
installations. Red Hat just announced an extension of their z10 BC pricing
promotion through the end of 2009:

Meanwhile, Novell recently had a general price reduction and has their own
z10 BC promotion:

Novell currently leads the System z Linux market. In a recent press
article, Novell claimed to have an 85% marketshare in the Linux on System z
market and is trying to grow that share. Red Hat is increasingly focusing
on the mainframe market to try to win additional marketshare. Both
companies are trying to expand the overall market.

In related news, IBM is currently offering a 25% off general price
promotion for many Lotus Notes user license products, including Lotus Notes
for Linux on System z. That promotion expires August 5, 2009. Details are
in announcement letter 309-533.
