Thurston is dead too soon, at age 65, another cancer victim.

He was the greatest geometer/topologist of this age and one of the
great geometers of any age, a figure of Euclidean importance.

Immediately relevant here, he was also a distinguished computer
scientist.  His book,

Groups, tilings, and finite-state automata.  Boulder, CO: American
Mathematical Society, 1989.

will amply repay the attention of those of you who have theoretical interests.
