Hi Anne,
I've analyzed Type 113 information for more than 2 years, using data sent
to me by CPExpert users and by IBM. Some of the Type 113 data covers only
a few hours, while other data covers more than a week for 24 hours a
day. With CPExpert Release 22.2 (issued end of October 2012), the CPExpert
WLM Component optionally does basic analysis of data produced by IBM's CPU
Measurement Facility (CPU MF) and recorded in SMF Type 113 records. You
can read a press release related to this new analysis at
http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/11/prweb10178593.htm.
When CPExpert Release 22.2 was issued, this analysis of CPU MF data was
done only for data in a MXG performance data base. For the analysis to be
done, the MXG ASUM113 and MXG ASUM70PR modules must have been executed
before CPExpert executes, and the files produced by these two MXG modules
must be in your performance data base.
Immediately after CPExpert Release 22.2 was issued, I received CPU MF data
from CPExpert users who use a MICS performance data base. Consequently,
CPExpert now performs analysis of Type 113 data placed in a MICS
performance data base, using the MICS HARCME, HARCML, and HARCMT files.
Structurally, CPExpert produces the results of its analysis as "rule
findings" and there is a document associated with each rule finding. The
documents describes the analysis approach, typically suggest alternative
solutions to problems, and provide references where more information can be
obtained. The CPExpert Rule WLM900 document describes the overall approach
used in analyzing CPU MF data, lists conclusions that I've made after
analyzing Type 113 data for more than 2 years, and offers suggestions on
how to use the results from CPExpert's analysis of the Type 113
information. I'll send you off-line the 20-page WLM900.pdf document. I
hope that you will find the insights in the WLM900 document interesting. :-)
Regards,
Don

Hello group. Does anyone have any experience (outside of the single red
book) on using IBM's CPU MF (Measurement Facility)? Any interesting
insights welcome. Thanks.
