Does gzip understand CKD format? Is z/OS a VM guest or are the DASD otherwise shared?
Ah! z/PDT. It's all virtual. Presumably you gzip the containers, not the volumes. This wouldn't work for real CKD DASD, would it? Is there a technique for clearing unallocated tracks in order to improve compression performance?
