How do you access "the z/os volumes when z/os is down"? Does gzip understand
CKD format? Is z/OS a VM guest or are the DASD otherwise shared?

Ah! z/PDT. It's all virtual. Presumably you gzip the containers, not the
volumes.
This wouldn't work for real CKD DASD, would it?

Is there a technique for clearing unallocated tracks in order to improve
compression
performance? (A data security erase might be useful for this.)
