Not blank; empty. _No_ blanks. Line mode compare reports:

                         LINE COMPARE SUMMARY AND STATISTICS

       134 NUMBER OF LINE MATCHES 0 TOTAL CHANGES (PAIRED+
         0 REFORMATTED LINES                    0  PAIRED CHANGES (REFM+P
         0 NEW FILE LINE INSERTIONS 0 NON-PAIRED INSERTS
         0 OLD FILE LINE DELETIONS 0 NON-PAIRED DELETES
       134 NEW FILE LINES PROCESSED
       134 OLD FILE LINES PROCESSED

While byte mode compare reports:

                        BYTE COMPARE SUMMARY AND STATISTICS

     3966 NUMBER OF BYTE MATCHES 17 TOTAL CHANGES (PAIRED+
       17 NEW FILE BYTE INSERTIONS 17 NON-PAIRED INSERTS
        0 OLD FILE BYTE DELETIONS 0 NON-PAIRED DELETES
     3983 NEW FILE BYTES PROCESSED
     3966 OLD FILE BYTES PROCESSED

OTOH, if I break one of the lines in half, line compare reports the difference;
byte compare calls the files identical. There's no right way.
