I am of course much older than Rob Scott, but my experience was,
agreeably, very different. I was taught Latin and Greek by a scholar
who should have been the chairman of a university classics department
but, because female, was instead the chairman of a secondary-school
one.

I shall always remember her translating, without embarassment or
resort to euphemism, lines from Catullus that even today would give
offense to many if I reproduced them here outside "the decent
obscurity of a learned language".
