Since you're speaking about windoze and Unix, what are these workload/overhead during such sort work. Can you still do work while that sorting is taking place or do you need a coffee break? ;)
That brings back memories. Back in the seventies we used SYNCSORT, but also had the IBM SORT for customers (AMS service bureau). We were offered a trial version of PLSORT (phase linear sort); it promised similar performance improvements. The only hitch was that the improvements were realized only on extremely large sorts, because the program spent too much time in initialization. Using it for all our sorting would have increased CPU time, residence time, and cost to the user.
