Ted MacNeil was absent from these precincts for some time. Recently
he has returned, wrapped, like Batman, in a mantle of virtue: He is
the sworn enemy of pretention, which in this case takes the form of
some knowledge of the cyrillic alphabet.

Roles of this sort are perilous. They are likely to expose
ignorance,. and they are very likely to distort content in defense of
the virtue being defended.

As Bertrand Russell put the matter, less charitably, "A stupid man’s
report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he
unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can
understand".
