FESN is like the COMPID (which IBM uses everywhere to identify products) but more granular. Remember that originally IBM was organized with a Field Engineering division which was separate from the divisions which created the software (GPD, OPD, etc.). So the creating divisions controlled the COMPID for the product and FE Division controlled the FESN. It is like a SKU. There is no customer relevance, hence why SMP/E does not document the field too much. It just propagates the value when provided for the SYSMOD.
