For me it was "always" colorful, because I started with colorful CRT display. However it raises question: when the colours were introduced? I mean ISPF, but it can be any other application, like MVS console or z/VM XEDIT, whatever. Note: colourful applications may work fine with monochrome displays, so it is not the question "when you started using colorful CRT".
