In American idiom "fanny" is completely acceptable slang for one's bottom. In Australian slang it is an offensive term for the female private anatomy.
I was in a class -- I think it was at ASG -- when the instructor said "what do you say? Should we take a break now?" and an American woman in the class said "yeah, my fanny's getting tired" and the Australians in the room turned and looked at her in horror.
