I'm not sure whether you're asking your "dumb question" to try to explain what happened, or to propose a possible recovery method. I assume the former, but if IEBCOPY did write an entire directory copy to SYSUT4, and the (presumably temp) SYSUT4 dataset hasn't yet been overwritten, there might be some useful material in it. Of course time is of the essence, and the method of copying the data is also critical.
