I have seen situations where HSM hangs due to a hardware fault on a tape
device. If the resultant WTO or WTOR is not replied to, and/or is accidentally
removed the device can be left hanging for weeks.

The most common reason I have seen for this is HSM managing a volume that
contains the HSM CDS's.
I strongly suggest isolation of the HSM CDS's to a non-hsm managed volume(s).

The most likely reason for the hang is a grs deadlock between HSM (managing
the volume) and HSM (accessing the CDS's.
Perhaps if the condition in excess of (e.g. 15 min). alert the operator.

I don't know if anyone else has come across this but HSM went into a hang state
in production for several hours. There was no indication of this and it only
came to light because jobs began to fail due to datasets not being recalled.
This has been reported to IBM and no doubt a fix will ensue.

However the customer has asked me if an alert could be generated if this
happens again. Does anyone have any ideas how this hang state could be detected
so that an alert could be generated ?

Regards,
John.
