When I've seen issue with SQA/ESQA during z/OS NIP processing it is mainly related changes in the I/O configuration. When you say you have a supersized IOCP on the z/VM side is the DASD/TAPE being used by the z/OS guest on the same channels as other DASD/TAPE devices? If yes, I'm not sure how things would react during z/OS NIP processing. I believe by default those devices would be online at least to z/VM. Position 10-14 is what you would use to add additional 24 bit SQA during NIP processing. You may just have to cause a failure and get a dump of the z/OS guest. Maybe the dump would show what is using up the 24 bit SQA.

Try giving it more ESQA and moving what you can above the line, then give it more SQA. -- Shmuel (Seymour J.) We received a IEW303W 878-04 abend. INITSQA 1500K at position 10-14 was added in his load. I would like to understand and our client too, what is the reason of this abend because he didn't fail into this at home. Same memory and both side, 1 CP more on VM side, less UCBs accessed on VM but some devices in client's IOCP defined. On VM side we have a supersized IOCP. I learnt the client works in sysplex, not under VM... Any idea ?
