I kept a copy of Iverson's "A Programming Language" for many years --
can't locate it now , I may have had to part with it on my last move.
Besides a description of the APL syntax and semantics, it included as a
complex example his functional description of the IBM 7090 processor
using APL.
When I was an undergrad at Univ of Okla, the Math Chairman, R.V. Andree,
sent myself and two grad students to IBM in Chicago to play with APL/360
for several days -- must have been in the 1966-67 time frame. At the
time, we were the main lab instructors for Andree's NSF-sponsored
computer training programs for high school students and teachers. I
don't remember much about the trip other than it was low budget and that
we stayed at the YMCA hotel and traveled by train (Sante Fe had direct
passenger service between Houston and Chicago that serviced Norman, OK
in those days).
I do remember later thinking that APL was ideally suited for interactive
computing in the days of what we would now consider ludicrously-slow
terminal speeds, because of the great complexity one could express in
only a few symbols and statements.
Coincidentally, one of the O.U. Math instructors who taught classes for
some of those same programs was a Lloyd Andrew. Iverson (1922-2005)-- as
far as I know, no relation to Ken.

I wonder, the name Ken Iverson is so familiar, does anyone know if he
taught any MVS Structure classes for IBM in NY?
I recall my teacher talking about the history of MVS, how it started,
why it was designed as to what it is now, and he talked like he was one
of the developers. just curious
