Apples and oranges Gil,
dd * is subsystem
dd dsn= is the access method.

Subsystem is spooled (to a spooled file) to a disk dataset and until recently had to be F or FB and I understand that JES2 has recently(?) changed it so it could be VB. Whether you complain about JES or file requirements is semi mute as all programs have constraints and the program rules the roost.
