The summer of '75, after my 8th grade, I sat in on my dad's PL/I class at 
University of Waterloo. This was sort of a big deal, of course-back then, 
middle school kids didn't have access to computers! A good friend, who was far 
from dumb or sheltered, asked me what "the computer's voice" sounded like. I 
was gobsmacked then, and, as you note, things haven't gotten a lot better!

(ISTR not even bothering to explain punched cards to him...)
