IBM Java support figured it all out. Java8 uses instructions from the instruction set on z10 and higher machines. And WE are using a z9 2096 machine. ERGO S-0C1 was for "ain't no such instruction" rather than the usual not on a half word boundery. Thanks for all your help. Wish they would either upgrade or replace the system so I can go retire... but they keep paying me.....
