Yes, TKE is closed appliance, however I did install microcode updates from SUL.  Yes, I did it for HMC, CPC, etc. It happened I instructed IBM CE's how to do some things. I also used to teach IBMers on official courses, HMC, etc.
Nevermind.

Regarding TKE and UFD (USB Flash Drive):
TKE allow user to format media as VFAT or EXT2.
Well, it is not VFAT, it is FAT32.
EXT2 is poor idea, except ACTBKP (pendrive used for backup media, must be labeled as ACTBKP, since old OS/2 times, pre-USB).
My experience:
TKE does not recognize ex-FAT. It does not recognize it at all.
TKE does recognize FAT32 and EXT4. However while TKE recognize both, only FAT32 can be read. EXT4 is recognized, but unreadable. So, it can be... reformatted only. TKE does NOT recognize UFD formatted as EXT2. Despite it is supported for media formatting. Note: My goal was to upgrade microcodes, not to recognize all the possibilities. That's why I asked. Finally I used pendrives formatted in some Ubuntu machine. I also used Ubuntu to read pendrives formatted in TKE: no issues for FAT32 aka VFAT. EXT2 can be mounted, but required root (su) to R/W.

---------------------------------
Result: use FAT32 for SUL.
Create backup (before and after) using FTP or ACTBKP - a TKE-formatted pendrive, which is EXT2 and can be read (just to move backup file) using Linux machine.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] TKE and USB filesystem

I need to update microcode in my TKE.
Unfortunately I used USB pendrive formatted as ext-FAT and it was unrecognized.

Q: what filesystems/formats are supported by TKE v9?
Due to some reasons I'd like to avoid Linux ext2 or ext3, because I copy
microcode from Windows 10 machine.
