FOr PDSE you'll get an error, for PDS your file may be (will be)
corrupted.
For DISP=NEW, he should have no problem. But RECFM=VB seems to be the
rational choice if the record lengths are, well, variable.
My "BTDT" experience was limited to DISP=NEW in first step, and several
further steps. It was enough to understand that LRECL should be the same
for all members.
I haven't studied all possible cases of (mis)use of PDS.
