You got me thinking of a VTAM guy I worked with who was originally from
Taiwan. He often had to think a bit when working with large numbers,
and I remember he said where he came from the large ones were separated
by 10,000 instead of 1000.

Yes. Some sources say blanks as thousands separators are recognised
internationally, especially in Europe. I wouldn't go that far, but I've
seen it in the wild in a few places around Europe.
The pairs of digits between commas in India were the biggest surprise to
me, so far.
