Ah, I should have known I'd get a "systems" answer. I am wondering about user
applications usage.
I attended the IBM zForum a couple of weeks ago and a customer
presentation by BNZ demonstrated COBOL programs calling Java to publish
application events to Splunk through Kafka. Kafka is a key component of
event-driven architectures. The end-to-end picture of transaction
visibility for monitoring and observability is critical for mainframe
customers as they move away from reactionary monitoring (“ambulance at
the bottom of the cliff’) and push towards decisions based on metrics,
observability, and insights.
What I found particularly interesting was how they refactored legacy
COBOL CICS transactions into the domain model with Java API
microservices. Kafka was very much a key component along with z/OS Connect.

For SMF data, Console Logs and other operational data the ones I’m familiar
with are:
IBM Common Data Provider
Precisely IronStream (formerly SyncSort)
Broadcom has the means to forward data through their CA Common Services

Does anyone publish messages to Kafka from z/OS? If so, what technology do you
use?
