To be honest I did it first time approx. 20 years ago.
It is quite simple method to filter the noise.
What is hard is making a decision. Because "maybe he will contribute
something important?". NO. Just no. You may read tons of spam just
because maybe there is hidden gem inside. There is no gem. The loss is
not noticeable and not worth your attention.
Regarding moderation - yes, we need it. As we need the rules. The law.
And the police (courts, etc.) to enforce the law.
Many years ago I became a victim of unprovoked, rude personal attack on
some other forum somehow related to mainframes. Moderator response was
immediate and the offender was deleted from the list of members.
