Suppose I have two identical DSNs on different volumes.
One is catalogued; the other not. (Does SMS allow that
nowadays?)
In a job step I allocate
DD DISP=(SHR,PASS),VOL=SER=<uncatalogued>...
In a subsequent step, I allocate by DSN with no explicit
volume informarion. Which one wins, the passed or the
catalogued?
Nowadays we use electricity and DFSMS for application datasets (or data
sets if you care).
Every SMS dataset is cataloged or deleted at the end of job. However for
backward reference you may still use pre-SMS methods.
BTW: it is possible to find uncataloged dataset on SMS-managed volume.
However this is one of the errors to resolve, not typical use. Such
dataset cannot be used.
Where is this clearly documented? I don't see t in
<https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zos/3.1.0?topic=parameter-passing-data-set>
It is part of my JCL course. Course materials (actually a book) are in
Polish, but you have free site in the class. :-)
Seriously: I don't think it is a knowledge to learn from a manual. It
should be taught.
How would a novice suss this out without a priori knowledge?
See above.
What would ChatGPT say?
Ask watsonx generative AI. :-)
