Happened to me something similar:

Set  the global LE runtime option TRAP(ON,NOSPIE) and forgot this.
As all our C/C++ programs are XPLINK , the stack over(under)flow condition was handled by ESTAE instead of SPIE. The effect was that the larger C/C++ testes started to run 2-3 times slower as before.

After a few hard days, it turned out the programs are mostly in some ESTAE routine.
Yeah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably much more, I remember now only for the last one.
