Yes, I'm a bit confused as well. IMS DB supports a particular SQL
vocabulary consistent with its capabilities, just as every database does.
It'd be no different between DB2 8 and DB2 10, for example -- DB2 10 has a
particular (larger) SQL vocabulary it supports. If you ask DB2 8 a DB2
10-unique question that's probably not going to work so well.

So the first answer is don't ask IMS DB SQL questions it can't answer (at
your particular version). Phrase the questions the way IMS DB expects, and
IMS DB will very happily and accurately reply.

That said, you can hire "agents" or "interpreters" if you wish that might
well be able to translate certain questions into other questions IMS DB
understands, just as you can hire someone to translate Spanish questions
into English questions if that's what you want/need. One notable example is
